From nautical to ethereal, find the right shade of blue for you (and your kitchen)
It was once said that, “colour is to the eye what music is to the ear,” and though that could be correct for any shade, in the kitchen that colour most certainly is blue. The correct placement of a well-chosen blue can transform a space from average to whimsical, preppy, offbeat, or sophisticated. So…
…when you only want to dip a toe in
Try a whimsical robin’s egg blue inside of glass-fronted cabinets. The blue, which has hints of green, looks especially fine against white and pale wood. In a cottage style kitchen, or American style craftsman home particularly, it pairs well with vintage crockery and tin containers.
…when you’re ready to go waist-deep
If you’re in a place to try something a bit more daring, create a blue feature wall. It can highlight everything from a dining set, to a breakfast nook, to a collection of art or family photos. A deep aqua may be too intense for a full kitchen, but as a feature wall, set off with silver accessories, it’s urban with a soft and feminine quality. For a more masculine take, use a grey-blue.
…when you think you can dunk your head under
If you’re ready to go-all in with blue, consider painting large surfaces like your cabinets bold shades. When cobalt cabinets are paired with classic worktop materials like a white Carrera marble and white backsplash, it creates a crisp and nautical look. For a less buttoned up appearance, consider cabinets in cerulean. It’s a great colour for a rustic kitchen with quirky personality. Complement it with white shiplap walls and a traditional wooden dinette set painted a sunny colour, like pale yellow. It’s not for everyone, but if it works in your kitchen it will speak volumes about you!
…when you just want to take the plunge
Paint your floors an ocean blue and then coat them with lacquer for high-gloss shine! It’s drastic, but with the right décor scheme, this look can go from rustic (think exposed wooden beams and white open shelving) to über modern (flat fronted white cabinets) in a heartbeat!
