With the right look, there are bright days ahead for kitchen island living
If the kitchen is the heart of the home, then what does that make the kitchen island? In most kitchens it is the most important work and socialising space, which means it deserves high-quality lighting solutions. Luckily there are no shortage of options designed to add serious lighting and great style to your kitchen.
If you flip through any design magazine, or visit any home design website, there’s no question that when it comes to island lighting, pendants reign supreme. Ranging wildly in size, style and price point it’s a guarantee that you will find the perfect pendant lighting for your island. Whether you opt for a collection of mini frosted glass tulips, clear glass globes, or vintage industrial shades, there are of course a few basic “rules” that can be followed to make the most of your investment. First, consider height. Typically, pendants should be placed 70 to 85 centimetres above the countertop. Then, there is the “rule of three”. A basic design principle, it states that generally, individual objects look best when grouped in threes – pendant lights included.
There is one instance in which the “rule of three” simply does not apply to island lighting. That is when you opt for big drama with big lights. Supersized pendant lights really only need to be installed in couples. Most kitchen islands simply are not big enough to warrant any more than two very large pendants. To get the look of maximum lighting impact (without going overboard) opt for two classic white, canvas drum pendants.
Want to make a big impact with your kitchen island lighting, even when the lights are turned off? Under cabinet lighting created by economical and easily installed LED light strips is a practical and whimsical addition. LED strip lights installed under your kitchen island provide a safe kitchen environment at night. It also has the added benefit of creating a floating effect – an ethereal option for a modern kitchen design scheme.
And don’t forget functionality! If you have a kitchen island hob, the extraction fan is the perfect place fit extra lights. For more on kitchen islands and other key kitchen elements, take a look at the Anatomy of a Modern Dream Kitchen.
